THE DEPTH OF

SCHOOL SEGREGATION

More than 65 years after Brown vs Board ruled school segregation as unconstitutional, school segregation is still a destructive issue for almost all the minority groups in the United States, especially the Latino and African-American population.

The Depth Of School Segregation

An Introduction To The Website

This website is an extension to the idea of school segregation, inspired by the book Anger Is A Gift by Mark Oshiro. In the book, Moss Jeffries, the main character, attends a predominantly black high school, West Oakland High School, that is known for mostly negative things. West Oakland High School received funding cuts due to low standardized test scores the previous year. As a result, many clubs are canceled and the school doesn't have enough copies of the book Things Fall Apart that the students must read from their phones. However, at the same time, the school has the funding to install metal detectors, war metal detectors. At their school college fair, only local community colleges show up, whereas Moss's friend, Esperenza, who attends a predominantly white school, has the most top colleges at her school fair. Inspired by the issues in this book centered around school segregation, this project will explore the events and situations revolving around school segregation dating from the 1950s to the present day because it's not fair to minority students their schools are underdeveloped only because most people with the same background as them attend their schools. It's not fair to minority students that they can't attend renowned schools, which are mostly white schools, because they don't have the facilities or their parents are afraid of letting their students attend school far away from the house. The one solution that will address both concerns is to make all schools the same, regardless of who attends the school. One school should not have more facilities than other schools because it is predominantly white, black, or Latino. This project is divided into four sub-categories to elaborate on the aspects of school segregation: historical events, busing, current events, and experiences. The historical events page will explore the Brown vs Board of Education Case of 1954 (Genre: Journal Entry) and the NYC School Boycott of 1964 (Genre: Newspaper Article). The following page will show the history of busing (Genre: Slideshow) and it will explain some events that caused setbacks in busing such as the Boston Busing Riots 1974. Then, the website will discuss what are some current events that have raised concern about school segregation in the public nowadays, such as the 2019 Presidential Debate and Kamala Harris's experience with busing, (Genre: Audio File) and the effect increasing residential segregation has on school segregation (Genre: Poster). Finally, the last subtopic being discussed in this website is varying student experiences due to school segregation. It will address the different opportunities provided to different racial groups (Genre: Flyer) and it will discuss how different the career of a white student is compared to a black student even though they grew up in the same state (Genre: Resumes). With this project, I hope youngsters who have the privilege to attend a renowned or successful school will see the struggles students in minority communities have to face to achieve a worthy education. Also, I hope after viewing this website, the viewers will learn what historical events are associated with school segregation, what led to setbacks in busing, what current events have sparked the issue of school segregation in public again, and what are the varying experiences of students of different racial groups due to school segregation. Enjoy the website!
